KKK IN NYC, like the Republican Convention wasn't enough...

In a move typical of the republican party when they came to one of the most democratic cities in the United States to try to use us (New Yorkers) as pawns to their publicity stunts, we are now faced with the repeated attempts of the KKK to have another parade in NYC.

Their last parade happened in 1999, when they (16 people exactly) were allowed to march amidst 8000 anti-Klan protesters.

At some point things got so heated that they had to be recued by a majority of African American police officers who hid them in the Supreme Court building and got them away from the crowds.
They had expected about 80 Klan members to show up that day, but blamed the the ban on the Klan masks by the Supreme court for the low attendance.

It's a known fact that most hate is created by fear, so it's obvious that the members of the KKK have terrible self esteem and are terrified of African Americans and most people who are not .. well... THEM, but they are also making it clear to all that even they are aware of how socially disfunctional and morally disturbed they are individually by having to hide themselves behind masks before showing up in public.

Makes you wonder about the compassion deprived, intellectually limited and culturally deficient upbringing these poor individuals had.

Today the Supreme Court has again rejected the appeals of the KKK to demonstrate wearing their masks.
So, come to New York ...but at least have the courage to let us see who the cowardly ignoramus 5 or 6 of you really are.

Soldiers Pay, the documentary

Very interesting 30 minute documentary about the soldiers who found $700 million in cash in Iraq. While one would expect a story about how noble they were and how dignified the whole thing was, what you really get is the truth for a change.

Interviews with those soldiers, as well as with several military heads, tell a story of blaming, looting and the realities of war, and how that money vanished once it got to the hands of those running this war.

It is estimated that one third of the monthly 3.9 billion cost of US troops in Iraq is going to private contractors.

Halliburton, the company formelly headed by vice-president Dick Cheney has won contracts worth more than 2 billion so far under Operation Iraqui freedom.

Soldiers complain that while they have been working with outdated materials, are short in ammunition, fighting for a gas mask and having even things like water rationed, so that some are having issues like kidney stones from dehydration, contractors lack nothing.
One mentions that one of the contractors was making 300k a year just to be a truck driver. Three to four times what soldiers make.

According to the Washington Post, the Bush draft budget for 2006 calls for over 900 million to be slashed from veteran's administration.

Right now, the only way to see it is on and off on IFC (Independent Movie Channel http://www.ifctv.com/ifc/index ) or by ordering it here: http://www.docworkers.com/.

ARE WE SAFER NOW?

North Korea is now the 9th nuclear power. There is enough evidence to suggest they have at least one or 2 nuclear weapons. Maybe up to nine. How does that affect us besides the obvious?

During the Clinton administration, the USA and North Korea signed an agreement that stated that North Korea would freeze and eventually dismantle its nuclear program, which would be verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in exchange for technology to use nuclear energy. A resource that would be vital to their economy, where several cities suffer from blackouts and power outages.

Another important aspect of the accord was the U.S. pledge to "provide formal assurances to the DPRK against the threat or use of nuclear weapons by the United States," a commitment that the United States has not lived up to.

In 2002, the Bush administration decided that pre-emptive strikes was a means to safety. So basically, by attacking any country at will, without any provocation, he would make us safer. He also included North Korea on the Axis of Evil.

Feeling rightfully threatened, they re-started their nuclear weapons program, and developed even more aggressive experimentations with chemical and biological weapons, testing them in their own population of prisoners believed to being descendents of American supporters during the Korean war (their only crime).
They have now succeeded in achieving their mission. They have also warned the other countries, that if attacked or threatened, they could choose to strike first OR second anywhere in the world.
The fear is not only real from that perspective. North Korea's biggest import has been missiles. Mostly to countries like Iran, Yemen, Syria, and Pakistan, which support them and feel threatened by American allies.
What would stop them, now that diplomatic resolutions have fallen apart, from selling weapons to our enemies, or even Al-Qaeda
?

When a 15 year old is asked by BBC reporters who he believes is the responsible for the tense situation between the US and North Korea, he has one reply: Bush
His family nods in aggrement.

ELECTIONS 2004: NEW YORK SOBS

I'm walking around today, and people are visibly shaken. Kerry's speech happens and you can see tears. It's my birthday and still, I feel the same.
But it's more than saddness and disappointment. It's frustration, and a sense of disbelief.

First, if americans are willing to accuse muslims of violence, to hate them and discriminate them because of what a few of them have done, how about the reasons of the world to hate americans because of what 58 million americans have decided?

Let's see, what makes us different from the terrorists? They are uneducated, hateful, scared people based on a leader who fools them into believing lies, who is based on religious fanatiscism, and who makes his people attack innocents victims in other countries.

Bush is a religious fanatic, who has the intelligence of a mole, but who still, with his puppeteers, managed to convince the majority of the frightened people in this country that attacking a country that never even as much as threatened us and that had nothing to do with 9/11 was a good cause.

And talking about 9/11: Let me remind those of you in conservative states that it happened HERE, in NYC. The people killed were OUR family members, OUR friends, in OUR backyard. And yet, we voted in average 82% against Bush. If he is worried about our security and not oil, why are we reacting this way? Somehow the people in small town Texas believe they know better what is good for our safety than the family members of those killed.

Why is the whole world protesting this administration? Is the whole world crazy, but conservative americans are the only ones who know what's good? Obviously NOT.

There is a saying that mentions that people deserve the representatives they choose. Well, americans seem to deserve a president who can't even speak English, who is greedy, limited, uncultured, easy to manipulate, religiously biased, corrupt, and who has no depth of thought in relation to the future of this country or our role in the world.

If there is one good thing about it, it's that he will be the only one to be blamed for the mess in Iraq, for the division of this country, for the failing economy, for the high unemployment, and for the United States being now the most hated country in the world.

But then again, that was already true, so the people who voted for him again might be too dense to notice. They might blame someone else when the number of terrorists growns larger with each act of aggression against innocent people from Bush. They probably will blame another president when their children don't have the same opportunities because the country has used up all of the money for health and education with ridiculous tax cuts and building bombs. When our wildlife reserves become oil landfills to bring even more money to the Bush family. And they will say that it's someone else's fault when their social security falls apart because the country is in debt.

Now, I don't blame only the conservatives. The democrats started by choosing the safest and least charismatic candidate, and have proven that they are spineless by giving up before the votes in Ohio were all counted. But they at least chose someone who could speak English, who knew that other countries exist and that americans need help right now, with health, education and the economy.
The message is, why bother to vote? It only affects our future, the lives of millions all over the world and the environment of the whole planet.

And my final words are: Why do I still care? Because 55 million people tried to make things better. 55 million people care about others but themselves and tried to educate themselves to make the right choices.
If you could have voted and didn't.. you have no right to complain. The young people in this country, who will pay for this in the long run seem to have decided that voting was too much trouble.

At least be the cowboys and terminators you all long to be and take responsibility for the consequences of your choices. We already know the president won't....

To vote or not to vote:

Vote, have a voice, make a difference. People are dying and your vote can change that. Countries are a mess and your vote can change that. Your friends are unemployed and your vote can change that. Your children's future is being harmed and your vote can change that. Children are losing their parents, their arms and legs, their homes, and your vote can change that. Laziness is just not an excuse this time around.

Quote from an open letter from the wife of a soldier who lost his leg in Iraq to President Bush and Secretary Rumsfeld:
"Your behavior has been inexcusable. You have been dishonest about the support the troops weren't getting and about what's happening on the ground in Iraq. I only have one vote. And my husband, David, is so disheartened that he feels his vote will not even matter. He has no faith left in our current government. I want all those who voted for you, President Bush, or who failed to vote, to realize that your actions led to my husband's terrible injury, as well as those of all the dutiful men and women who fulfilled your demands and have been maimed or killed in Iraq as a result of the administration's miscalculations and poor judgment."

HELP NOW !!!!

The Kerry campaign has been inundated with requests from people who want to volunteer in swing states. There are too many people for the campaign staff to call, so out-of-state volunteers have been enlisted to make calls from home to help coordinate efforts.

The Kerry Phone Corps works like this: you access a web-page with a list of campaign events in a given state and a list of five people to call there. You ask the people if they can help at a particular event. You then fill out a web form with their response and click to send it back to Kerry headquarters. The names of any people you can't reach go back into the pool at 4 AM.
I just got this urgent e-mail from the Kerry Campaign re canvassing this weekend in Florida:
The Florida campaign's field team has scheduled 50 door-to-door canvasses across their state for this weekend, and they're relying on you and other JohnKerry.com supporters to recruit volunteers to show up and work. The only limit to the number of undecided and sporadic voters that the Florida campaign can reach this weekend is the number of volunteers these calls can recruit. Start making calls to Florida right now by going to: http://calls.johnkerry.com
Just read our short instructions and script, and then call your list of Florida supporters. These are people who signed up or contributed on JohnKerry.com just like you did -- folks who want to volunteer and just need to be told where to go.
You know how important Florida is to winning this election. Help us come through for Florida tonight by taking even just 15 minutes to make a few phone calls. Start off with five and work your way up.
Our best caller made more than 100 calls in one night. But 1000 people making five or ten calls can make a huge difference. I can't tell you how important this effort is. Kerry has made up a lot of ground in the last few weeks. But the Bush team does not give up easily when its back is against the wall. With a little less than three weeks to go, things are going to get very intense and probably ugly. We need an army of volunteers to counteract whatever they are going to throw at John Kerry. If you could make some phone calls to Florida, that would be a great service to the cause.
To get started, go to: http://calls.johnkerry.com If you are not already a Kerry volunteer, you'll be directed to a page to create an account. Please forward this message to anyone on your list who might be able to help.

Yours for regime change on Nov. 2

The Liberals

First, to those who have been speaking of the protesters as the "liberals", lol, as if it were a bad word:

I am very proud to be one, and since most conservatives aren't aware of what that really means, here is the definition:

- Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry.

- Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.

- Of, relating to, or characteristic of liberalism.

- Liberal Of, designating, or characteristic of a political party founded on or associated with principles of social and political liberalism, especially in Great Britain, Canada, and the United States.

- Tending to give freely; generous: a liberal benefactor.

- Of, relating to, or based on the traditional arts and sciences of a college or university curriculum: a liberal education.

- A person with liberal ideas or opinions.

- Not narrow or contracted in mind; not selfish; enlarged in spirit.

- Not bound by orthodox tenets or established forms in political or religious philosophy; independent in opinion; not conservative; friendly to great freedom in the constitution or administration of government; having tendency toward democratic or republican, as distinguished from monarchical or aristocratic, forms; as, liberal thinkers; liberal Christians; the Liberal party.

Hope that helped clear things up a bit. And for those who are curious, the definition to conservative is the following:

- Resistant to change
- Opposed to liberal reforms
- Unimaginatively conventional.
- Conforming to the standards and conventions of the middle class; "a bourgeois mentality" [syn: bourgeois, materialistic]
- a person who has conservative ideas or opinions [syn: conservativist] [ant: liberal]

I will be posting some material on the protest soon. Have a nice Holiday everyone.

NEW JERSEY GOVERNOR JIM McGREEVEY RESIGNS BECAUSE OF GAY AFFAIR

N.J. Governor McGreevey, 47, twice married, father of two, resigned today.
In general, that would be of little interest to me. What made me pay attention was the fact that he allegedly resigned because of a gay affair.

In a statement today he declared:
" At a point in every person's life, one has to look deeply into the mirror of one's soul and decide one's unique truth in the world -- not as we may want to see it or hope to see it but as it is,'' McGreevey told reporters at the Capitol in Trenton. ``My truth is that I am a gay American.''

Some say he had courage by coming out. I'd agree more if he had proven real dignity and nerve by coming out and proving to those too narrow minded to see that being gay should in no way make you less of a person, but if anything, help you live a more honest and direct life once you come out.
My support for gay causes has always streamed from the fact that I believe one's sexual preference in no way determines what kind of person you are. That the ridiculous claim that they should have fewer rights than any of us is anti-democratic and just plain ignorant.
I don't think McGreevey has in any way helped the cause of equality by cowardly resigning and proving those who now think less of him right.

Sometimes it's hard to put into perspective the changes that are occurring around you. And more often than not, one gets frustrated when they try to do work they believe in. There is always a voice saying... "Take the path of least resistance, it won't matter anyway..".

I got a letter from a 12 year old named Annie saying:
"I knew there was something really wrong with how the governement was doing things, but everyone I mentioned that to said I should just shut up and support my president.
I was part of one of your community projects and it changed how I see the world around me. Not because you were trying to make me believe in something, but simply because you were trying to say, look around, without prejudices and come to your own conclusions. And I did. And the world is richer, and little things don't bother me as much, and I care more about people I didn't understand before and I'm willing to tell how I feel even if people don't understand me or disagree. I'm not just an ant in an anthill, as you said. So thank you."

As long as there are young people like you who are trying to see the world from someone else's eyes for a change, we know there are reasons to hope we will learn from our mistakes and work for a better future for ALL of us.

Annie also sent me the following, because she thought I would find it funny. I did, sadly enough, lol. So I decided to share it:

Things you have to believe to be a Republican today:

Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush's daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him and a bad guy when Bush needed a "we can't find Bin Laden" diversion.

Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is communist, but trade with China and Vietnam is vital to a spirit of international harmony.

The United States should get out of the United Nations, and our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against Iraq.

A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind without regulation.

Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals and Hillary Clinton.

The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in speeches while slashing veterans' benefits and combat pay.

If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won't have sex.

A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our long-time allies, then demand their cooperation and money. Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy.

Providing health care to all Americans is socialism. HMOs and insurance companies have the best interests of the public at heart.

Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools.

A president lying about an extramarital affair is a impeachable offense. A president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy.

Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet.

The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades, but George Bush's driving record and the fact that Bush never actually reported in person for the last two years of his air force service is none of our business.

Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness, and you need our prayers for your recovery.

You support states' rights, which means Attorney General John Ashcroft can tell states what local voter initiatives they have the right to adopt.

What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in the '80s is irrelevant.

If you don't send it to at least 10 other people, we're likely to be stuck with Bush for 4 more years. Friends don't let friends vote Republican.

OUTFOXED

In times when lies have prevailed it's a relief to realize that at least a portion of the truth is being made available to the public as a whole.

The information is, of course, being delivered by the independent filmmakers community in the form of Farenheit 9/11 and now Outfoxed among many, many others.

Though it has been a pleasure to watch the discussions we have been having for years finally spreading to the general population, this transition hasn't been without major resistance from the conservatives.

The most recent attempt to stop the information from being divulged has come from Fox Network, who has been suing the producer of Outfoxed in an attempt to halt its distribution..

Outfoxed demonstrates in painful detail how one media empire, making full use of the public airwaves, can reject any semblance of fairness or perspective, and serve as the mouthpiece of right-wing conservatives, fully relishing its role. Media critic Jeffrey Chester describes the Fox News operation most succinctly in the film: "Fox News Channel is a 24/7 commercial for the conservatives and the Republican Party."

WARNING: disturbing pictures below

Keeping up with the history of secrecy and misleading information this administration has been perpetuating, 17 soldiers were removed from duty last month, but the motives for the dismissal were kept a secret.
Well, the reasons came out now and they are even more disturbing than one would anticipate.

It has become known now that since January 2004 there have been investigations on extreme cases of human rights violations, torture and humiliation performed by american soldiers against Iraqui prisoners.
The reports about these violations were brought to the attention of President George Bush and Rumsfeld then, and all that was done at the time were massive public relations meetings to prevent the public from finding out about them before the elections.

Now, justice being done, I must bring up the fact that the pictures of these despicable acts only became known thanks to some honest and courageous soldiers and commanders who brought these pictures to the attention of authorities.

So, what has the administration done about it?
Not only did it hide these facts from the american public, but the administration has kept it hidden from congress.
Apparently it was not enough that the United States INITIATED an unprovoked war against a country, that there were no weapons of mass destruction ( another lie ), that the government said they were "liberating" the Iraqui people when they bombed them in a display of high tech weapons raining on the population, instead of admiting that they were interested in the largest untapped oil reservoirs in the world.

Also, not widely known, are the reports of torture perfomed by american armies throughout the world, which include 14 other prisons in Iraq alone.
For those who think this is the whole truth, let me pinpoint the fact that no less (and certainly many more) than 25 Iraqui prisoners have died while in prisons run by the US army this year.

In the words of Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Chip Frederick, one of the people involved in the tortures:
"Military intelligence has encouraged and told us 'Great job. They usually don't allow others to watch them interrogate. But since they like the way I run the prison, they have made an exception. We had military intelligence, we had all kinds of other government agencies, FBI, CIA ... All those that I didn't even know or recognize. We help getting them to talk with the way we handle them. ... We've had a very high rate with our style of getting them to break. They usually end up breaking within hours."

In reports from 2003 , the following behaviors against prisoners in Iraq were observed:
Breaking chemical lights and pouring the phosphoric liquid on detainees; pouring cold water on naked detainees; beating detainees with a broom handle and a chair; threatening male detainees with rape; allowing a military police guard to stitch the wound of a detainee who was injured after being slammed against the wall in his cell; sodomizing a detainee with a chemical light and perhaps a broom stick, and using military working dogs to frighten and intimidate detainees with threats of attack, and in one instance actually biting a detainee.

To this administration and Rumsfeld, the main issue is not that it occurred, but that the pictures made it to the news to show the world what is really happening all over the world. There are several cases in which news reports which were aware of the issues have received an appeal from the Defense Department, and eventually from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Richard Myers, to delay broadcast. Most complied for fear of being accused of breaching national security.

For a country that supposedly went in to this war to "liberate" the Iraqui people from the torture and humiliation they faced in the hands of Saddam Hussein, it is ironic that the President has found himself explaining to the Iraqui people that we are not like Saddam. Apparently, the irony was lost on him.

And a note: The US has delayed the release of the annual report "Supporting Human Rights and Democracy: The US Record" which was to have been released on Wednesday. I wonder why....

So our venerable president does it again...uses the death of 3000 people, the suffering of their families and the well intentioned feelings of americans everywhere to do ads to boost his weighless career after promising not to use the tragedy in his campaign during a speech in 2002. But why am I surprised?
From the moment he came back from hiding, days after the attacks, he's done nothing but use those deaths to move along his political agenda.

Let's start from some of the most invasive, anti-democratic and conservative laws against human rights and personal privacy this country has ever seen. (for more information, check http://www.aclu.org/safeandfree/ .

Then let's move to keeping immigrants behind bars without charging them of any crimes, without giving them right to a defense and keeping them for years in a situation where physical and psychological abuse has been inflicted upon them because they had a "hunch" that they might be dangerous somehow. So what if they ended up being innocent after all?
Then, of course, there was the intelligence warnings that all should have paid attention to BEFORE the attacks, but that was blamed on others until people forgot about it.
And ooops... IRAQ !!!!
All of a sudden, Sadan Hussein was a terrorist determined to help Bin Laden with his nuclear weapons and it just happens that was just a lie too.
It seems like there were millions of protesters all over the world trying to bring that fact to the attention of the general population, but as always, the truth is just coming out now and people still have no idea just how much they were lied to.
Before the next elections, please do yourself , your country and the world a favor, do some research and VOTE !!!!

Film Industry : Hollywood Versus NYC

From recent frustrating experiences negotiating contracts between the two cities, I have come to certain conclusions I would desperately like to reconsider, if given good enough arguments to do so. Being in the performing arts industry in NY and having some humble but extensive knowledge of the arts industry here and in L.A, some basic differences seem to come to mind:

Los Angeles:

- Commonly known as the city where looks are everything. It seems to target audiences who believe that showing big houses, busty stereotypical blondes, and a ridiculously expensive life style is a way of life.
- The closer the Hollywood material gets to "real life" manifests itself as "reality shows", where situations are pre-set, personalities carefully chosen to create conflict and real situations improvised by an unrealistically model like cast and edited out unless they help ratings.
- Vanity, clothes and a typically square, unintelligent, fake American way of living seems to be the caviar of producers and directors in the money making scheme of selling superficiality and unattainable ideals as if they should be standards.
- Lacking seems to be any real understanding of what those who got to the top had to go through to get there. Any sense of their humanity gone, in a sad way, invalidating their own financial accomplishments and representing a "perfect" way of life they have to pretend to live up to by making everything about themselves just as superficial as it's expected from them or risk being destroyed by the same media that created them.
- Social contact, in a city where people drive everywhere, is scarce, and the only contact producers have with their audience is via the ratings they help boost.

NYC:
- In a stunning contrast, there is NYC, the capital of the world, the center of multiculturalism and variety, where standard TV blonde translates more as unappealing, boring and unimaginative when compared to the exotic rainbow of shades, colors, tastes and singularities offered here.
- Reality TV here, means going to Chinatown and exploring what people, stores, issues can be found, means the only broadcasting show made by people with disabilities, means having an African American Lesbian run the show because she knows what she is doing, not to avoid lawsuits.
- Our success stories are not void of the insecurities that come from being extremely rich, and fearing that those around you want nothing but to profit from the relationship. Our love for glamour and beauty doesn't hide the fact that some need to show off their material accomplishments to compensate for other insecurities. That jelousy is not always something one wants to deal with. Those insecurities are where the story really lies.

- In NY, we have to take the subway, to walk on crowded streets, to deal with each other. Diverse human contact , even when invasive, different, contradictory, challenging, is unavoidable.

Even the taste of diversity found in Hollywood at times seems to come from NY:
Jennifer Lopez, Eddie Murphy, Denzel Washington, Whoopi Goldberg, Queen Latifah, Lucy Liu, Angela Basset..

There are exceptions to all rules, and in this case, they are many, but the pattern seems to persist. While Hollywood still takes itself seriously, we see the humour in our flaws instead of hiding them.
While L.A. is about what you can pretend to be, NY is about being in your face about what you believe in, even if you believe in nonsense. It's raw, direct, sometimes cruel, but the beauty lies, not in the how many diamond necklaces your digitally altered image can hold on the cover of Vogue, but in the perplexity of what we are.
The fantasy we create is richer for it's variety and originality, instead of the formulas Hollywood seems to attach itself to. It's about what money can buy that will show off who you are, more than what others expect from you.
In an ironic NY twist, even while writing this article, I can read some of the faults in my own arguments, so please undertake my challenge.
Perfection is a sad illusion. Hollywood, prove me wrong...

The day after the attacks, former EPA Deputy Administrator Linda Fisher's chief of staff e-mailed senior EPA officials to say that "all statements to the media should be cleared" first by the National Security Council, which is Bush's main forum for discussing national security and foreign policy matters with his senior aides and Cabinet, the inspector general's report says.
That council, which coordinates federal environmental efforts, in turn "convinced EPA to add reassuring statements and delete cautionary ones," the inspector general found.
For example, the report found, EPA was convinced to omit from its early public statements guidance for cleaning indoor spaces and tips on potential health effects from airborne dust containing asbestos, lead, glass fibers and concrete.
Sen. Hillary Clinton slammed the Bush administration yesterday for misleading New Yorkers about air quality in lower Manhattan after the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.
She says the public was deceived and is owed an explanation. "I have had people come up to me and say, 'Well, what do you expect? Nobody could know.' And I said 'Right. Maybe in the immediate aftermath, the first couple of days nobody could know.' But a week later, two weeks later, two months later, six months later? Give me a break. They knew and did not tell us the truth and the White House told them not to tell us the truth."
The former first lady is calling for an investigation into the matter and asking for a new federal clean-up effort at the site. "What transpired in the White House? I know a little bit about how White Houses work. I know somebody picked up a phone, somebody got on a computer, somebody got an e-mail, somebody called for a meeting. Somebody in that White House, probably under instructions from somebody further up the chain, told the EPA: 'Don't tell the people of New York the truth.' And I want to know who that is," said Senator Clinton.
